Boundary Layer Analysis of Plane Strain Shear Cracks Propagating Steadily on an Impermeable Plane in an Elastic Diffusive Solid

چکیده
MATCHED asymptotic expansions are used to examine the stress and pore pressure fields near the tip of a plane strain shear (mode II) crack propagating on an impermeable plane in a linear elastic diffusive solid. For propagation speeds V that are large compared with c/I, where c is the diffusivity and I is the cracklength, boundary layers are required at the crack-tip and on the line ahead of the crack. The latter is required to meet the condition of no flow across this plane; in contrast, for propagation on a permeable, plane, a boundary layer is required on the crack faces behind the tip. As for the permeable plane, the solution in the crack-tip boundary layer reveals that the stress field near the crack-tip has the form of the usual linear elastic field with a stress intensity factor [(I v,,)/( Iv)]K”‘, where K”’ is the stress intensity factor of the outer elastic field, v is the Poisson’s ratio governing slow (drained) deformation, and v,, > 1’ is the Poisson’s ratio governing rapid (undrained) deformation. Thus. coupling between deformation and tluid diffusion reduces the local value of the stress intensity factor and. hence, stabilizes against rapid propagation. For the permeable plane, the pore pressure goes to zero as the crack-tip is approached along any ray. In contrast. for the impermeable plane, a closed-form solution for the pore pressure in the cracktip boundary layer reveals that the pore pressure at the crack-tip is non-zero, but bounded.

THE EFFECT OF PURE SHEAR ON THE REFLECTION OF PLANE WAVES AT THE BOUNDARY OF AN ELASTIC HALF-SPACE
This paper is concerned with the effect of pure shear on the reflection from a plane boundary of infinitesimal plane waves propagating in a half-space of incompressible isotropic elastic material. For a special class of constitutive laws it is shown that an incident plane harmonic wave propagating in the considered plane gives rise to a surface wave in addition to a reflected wave (with angle o...
متن کاملPlane Strain Dislocations in Linear Elastic Diffusive Solids
Solutions are obtained for the stress and pore pressure due to sudden introduction of plane strain dislocations in a linear elastic, fluid-infiltrated, Biot, solid. Previous solutions have required that the pore fluid pressure and its gradient be continuous. Consequently, the antisymmetry (symmetry) ofthe pore pressure p about y = Orequires that this plane be permeable (p = 0) for a shear dislo...

Quasi-static shear crack propagation in a linear elastic fluid-saturated porous solid c;Iuses a change of pore pressure on the crack plane if it is impermeable but not if it is permeable. Assuming that the pore pressure induced on the crack plane reduces the efTcclive compressive stress (total stress minus pore fluid pressure) and. as a result. the frictional resistance. we find that the energy...

In this paper, the analytical solution of an electric and Volterra edge dislocation in a functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) medium is obtained by means of complex Fourier transform. The system is subjected to in-plane mechanical and electrical loading. The material properties of the medium vary exponentially with coordinating parallel to the crack. In this study, the rate of the gradual ch...

This paper deals with the behavior of anti-plane shear crack in a piezoelectric layer bounded between two orthotropic half-planes within the framework of linear electroelasticity. The crack surfaces are assumed to be permeable or impermeable. The analysis is based on the stress fields caused by Volterra-type screw dislocation in the medium. Fourier transforms are used to reduce the dislocation ...
